A New Year Dawns With a New Set of Challenges and Opportunities for the Future
In a matter of days, Donald Trump will return to the presidency, and the Republican Party will hold narrow majorities in both houses of congress. Many of us dwell in despair, and understandably so; our neighbors have voted for reactionary policies and politicians, and the incoming administration is sure to bring suffering for everyone through its backwards economic promises, not to mention the suffering that will result from the empowerment of racist, xenophobic, homophobic, and transphobic politicians.
But all is not Lost, in the New Year!
The election season has ended, but that does not mean that the time for political action has passed. Now more than ever is the time to recognize that political action neither starts nor ends with the ballot box. Now is the time to turn fear into something more useful. Now is the time to come together and to unite, the time to obstruct regressive legislation through any means possible and the time to lift one another up, to ease the coming suffering and to resist their efforts to break our resolve. We must take to the streets to defend and advance the rights of everyone in our community; the right to bodily autonomy, the right to live as one’s true self, the right to live without fear of deportation, the right to healthcare, the right to housing, the right to live. We must work to lift each other up, to build community and power and opportunity separate from the whims of the government and the ruling class.
There is Opportunity in the Return of Donald Trump
Since his re-election, thousands have joined the Democratic Socialists of America, recognizing that it is only through socialism that we can fight against the reactionary death-spiral of the capitalist order. The Democratic Party has failed us again as it always has, and now we are left to clean up their mess, to alleviate the suffering that they have made possible. As the new year arrives, join us, and help us build a force for true change in Sonoma County, in California, in the United States, and in the world at large.
So, Celebrate the New Year!
