If so, please list them and your position within them.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also hold the position of secretary for Neighborhood Garden Initiative, a small nonprofit that focuses on food sovereignty and community gardening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How would you explain what Mutual Aid is and how it&#8217;s different from charity to a new member?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-d218db1\" data-block-id=\"d218db1\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Mutual aid is community interdependence that isn\u2019t reliant on government or corporate systems. Charity is often a top down affair where well-meaning orgs must pander to the rich in order to fund public services which should just be a normal part of society.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What is your vision for the Mutual Aid Committee?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want us to be a microcosm of socialism in our community that inspires people to get involved and see the possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What do you think SoCo DSA&#8217;s Mutual Aid Committee has done well, and what do you think needs improvement?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve created a very empowering environment at our meetings that facilitates member projects. The thing we need to work on is mostly a self-report, and that is consistency in scheduling things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What do you think the Mutual Aid Committee should prioritize in the next year?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue putting on events that benefit our community and increase engagement in the broader membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Describe any additional qualifications, skills, perspective, or experience you would bring to this position.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve worked in various positions where I\u2019ve had to interact with the general public since I was a teenager. This has given me a lot of opportunities to remain calm under pressure and develop class consciousness. Charity is asymmetrical and sometimes conditional. Mutual Aid is peer-to-peer and unconditional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What is your vision for the Mutual Aid Committee?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re a young chapter and a newish committee, and it&#8217;s important to keep that reality in mind. It&#8217;s important also that we do things in ways that are sustainable over the long term.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-b052a34\" data-block-id=\"b052a34\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">That said, my vision is for us to continue to be the cultural powerhouse of SoCoDSA by putting socialist ideas into a form that people can feel, touch, taste, &amp; experience. We will provide nurturing social spaces, teach people skills, and distribute resources \u2013 and look cute doing it! I think we can and should model a human-centered style of organizing: learning by doing, holding space for imperfections, and doing our part to create the world we want to live in.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What do you think SoCo DSA&#8217;s Mutual Aid Committee has done well, and what do you think needs improvement?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think our event production in the past few months has been excellent. We&#8217;ve also been good at creating a group culture and we&#8217;re a good hang. We were among the first to take direct actions in the BRAID campaign, and we&#8217;re responsive to other parts of our chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look, we&#8217;re a volunteer organization, and I think it&#8217;s important that I be constructive in my critique: I think we&#8217;ve allowed the importance &amp; value of what we do to be diminished at times. I think we should become louder &amp; prouder of what we do. I think we should demand to be recognized. Speaking for myself, I also need more practice asking for help &amp; receiving support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What do you think the Mutual Aid Committee should prioritize in the next year?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Internally, building up organizers to become self-actualized and able to bottom-line their own projects. Teaching people to ask for help &amp; receive support. Having fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Externally, continuing to embody our values &amp; supporting the people around us. Making our events accessible, and making sure people know about them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Describe any additional qualifications, skills, perspective, or experience you would bring to this position.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m a singer at heart. I want to bring people together around something we can all enjoy. I now understand that takes a lot more than just mouth sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also have a lot of experience working with my body in close coordination with others! It all comes back to community and building each other up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mutual aid works outside of the system. Charity is part of the system.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-e7b58b8\" data-block-id=\"e7b58b8\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\"><em>What is your vision for the Mutual Aid Committee?<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>My vision for the mutual aid committee is for us to become a formidable force for good in the community alongside the chapter as a whole. We are already laying the groundwork to do so with our community events, and I know we&#8217;re just getting started. I see the committee growing and an increase in members emboldened to bottomline projects. I see the committee continuing to build community and in doing so better understand the needs of our people in Sonoma County. I see us building independent support systems to help each other in the chapter and the greater Sonoma County area while as a chapter, we work to build legal systems that provide that support without the need for mutual aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What do you think SoCo DSA&#8217;s Mutual Aid Committee has done well, and what do you think needs improvement?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mutual Aid Committee is really special, holding hybrid meetings truly allows for the in-person connection for those who can make it but also creates accessibility for those who can&#8217;t. Our Mutual Aid Committee has done a great job at developing a core group of very active members and hosting mutual aid events like the Really Really Free Market, Bread and Roses, Mending Circle, and many more. I&#8217;m really proud of the work we&#8217;ve done in that regard, but there is always room for growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mutual Aid Committee would really benefit from an increase in people willing to take on leadership roles. In recent weeks, several new people have taken the leap to bottomline projects for the first time, and we need more of that to increase our capacity. There are several mutual aid projects on hold simply because we do not have any of the active members with the capacity to do so. As Captain that&#8217;s something I would focus on, finding ways to embolden people to take on new roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What do you think the Mutual Aid Committee should prioritize in the next year?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mutual Aid committee should prioritize community, sustainability, and accessibility. Community is a big part of the chapter&#8217;s work as a whole as well as mutual aid, and we should continue to prioritize that. We do important work at mutual aid and it is imperative to make sure everyone is taking care of themselves and not just everyone else in the community. If not, the work is unsustainable and the systems will fail as people burnout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a disabled person, accessibility is hugely important to me. Mutual Aid committee already works hard to make things accessible (shout out to our hybrid meetings, being in-person makes it so much easier for me to focus), and it&#8217;s important to continue that legacy and ensure that everyone who wants to make it to events can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Describe any additional qualifications, skills, perspective, or experience you would bring to this position.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like anyone with a passion for mutual aid, I deeply care about people, but from a political organizing point of view I have a unique perspective. I am relatively new to organizing and have read little theory, so I view things through a different lens. I\u2019m also highly empathetic which helps me view situations from multiple perspectives and helps me compromise when necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I work in healthcare as a speech-language pathologist, and have experience with navigating complex and frustrating communication. I&#8217;m fiercely determined and will do everything in my power to reach a goal, but I can be pragmatic when I need to be. I have a strong ability to think through problems and organize solutions which is important for political organizing and teamwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What is a fun fact about you unrelated to your political work?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m a big crafter! Nothing can stop me from learning a new way to create&#8230; except for time. I love to knit, crochet, cross-stitch, embroider, draw, and probably more I&#8217;m forgetting. If so, please list them and your position within them.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m a board member of Forests Unlimited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How would you explain what Mutual Aid is and how it&#8217;s different from charity to a new member?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mutual aid is the way a community supports itself by members supporting each other, with everyone bringing their unique skills, perspectives, and resources to the table to make sure everyone in the community can survive and thrive, as opposed to begging governments or rich people and hoping that they will deign to help us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mutual aid and charity are not mutually exclusive, but mutual aid gives the community the power to make their own decisions about what they need and deserve.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-91212b4\" data-block-id=\"91212b4\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\"><em>What is your vision for the Mutual Aid Committee?<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I would like to expand membership by making sure everyone feels they have a place in Mutual Aid, not only DSA members but community members as well. Mutual Aid works better and better the more people are involved, and I really want to focus on centering sustainability of our movement and joy of our members. A larger membership base means certain people don&#8217;t have to feel like keeping things running isn&#8217;t sitting only on their shoulders, and people can step forward and back as need be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What do you think SoCo DSA&#8217;s Mutual Aid Committee has done well, and what do you think needs improvement?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mutual Aid Committee has been amazing for allowing members to start projects that they are passionate about, which is great for joy and short-term energy.
