Sonoma County, California: The Sonoma County Democratic Socialists of America (SoCo DSA) is excited to announce our endorsement of SoCo DSA member Joanna Paun for Sonoma County Board of Supervisors District 2.

Joanna Paun is a local community leader, serving as a Petaluma School Board member since 2018, and working as a foster and homeless youth education coordinator for the County Office of Education for the past two years. In these roles, she has worked every day to make sure our schools and public systems deliver real results for families—not politics as usual. Her dedication has been regularly recognized, earning the title of California Board Member of the Year in 2022 and 12th District Woman of the Year in 2023.

We are confident that as Supervisor, Joanna will fight for the working people of Sonoma County, and her candidacy could not come at a more crucial time. It has never been more unaffordable to live in our county, and as the federal government infringes on our civil liberties, the county has still not committed to non-compliance with ICE – a rogue agency kidnapping our neighbors and harming our communities. Joanna is a candidate who recognizes any threat to one of us is a threat to all of us, and has committed to ending cooperation with ICE.

An endorsement from SoCo DSA is more than a stamp of approval; it is a significant commitment to both support a candidate’s campaign and their term in office. In the coming months we will mobilize our members for canvassing, phone-banking, and special events – and once elected, we will maintain a close relationship with the Supervisor to provide democratic feedback and organizing support.

“I’m proud to have the endorsement of SoCo DSA,” says Paun. “I’m running for Sonoma County Supervisor to bring accountable, transparent leadership rooted in community and focused on real results. County government should work for everyday residents, not just those with the loudest voices or the most access. Our campaign shares DSA’s vision of a fairer, more livable world with people at the forefront, where ordinary people have a real voice in our workplaces, communities, neighborhoods, and in the decisions that shape our lives.”

The Democratic Socialists of America is one of the fastest-growing political organizations in the country, surpassing 100,000 members in February. Our movement is a popular one, with 66% to 74% of Democratic voters viewing socialism favorably, and this is particularly true in Sonoma County. Our chapter was only founded in May, but as of this release, SoCo DSA is the 15th largest DSA chapter by population density in the country. The people of Sonoma County are ready for a change, and we are excited for Joanna Paun to be at the forefront of that movement.
