Sonoma County, California: The Sonoma County Democratic Socialists of America calls upon Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to run for President of the United States in 2028. We’ve voted overwhelmingly to back her run, grow DSA into a force to be reckoned with, and advance democratic socialism nationwide—and we call upon DSA chapters across the country to do the same.
A presidential campaign builds infrastructure across all fifty states, platforms our ideals and goals into the mainstream, and rallies voters under the banner of democratic socialism. In 2016 and 2020, Bernie Sanders’ campaigns accomplished this, not only building class consciousness across a wide swath of the country, but skyrocketing growth in DSA as the organization campaigned for him. This growth has been crucial to the work DSA has done: fighting for unions, healthcare, and housing, opposing ICE, and calling for an end to Israel’s genocide and apartheid in Gaza.
Today, we have an unprecedented opportunity to support a similarly transformative campaign. DSA’s electoral victories across the country—including Zohran Mamdani, Chris Rabb, Melat Kiros, and many others—have continued to grow the popularity of DSA and democratic socialism. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is not only a DSA member, but is also the most viable progressive candidate considering a run for president.
Democrats and Republicans have been moving rightward for decades, tightening their authoritarian grip on us all. It is time to stop that slide. It is essential to begin this campaign as soon as possible and unite resoundingly behind a democratic socialist for president. It is how we double the size of DSA, it is how we will inspire the working class nationwide, and it is how our goals—like abolishing ICE or ending the genocide in Gaza—come within reach.
